DIGITAL FIRES A NEW NT SALVO
On September 25, Digital Equipment Corporation revealed its
strategy for further expanding its position in the volume desktop
business by aggressively targeting the exploding market for
high-performance, low-cost Windows NT-based personal
workstations. To support its strategy, Digital introduced the
industry's fastest personal workstation family, based on both
Intel and Digital Alpha processors and featuring a common
PCI-based architecture. It features PC-like distribution and
pricing, interchangeable components and a focus on technical
applications.
The Celebris XL and Alpha XL personal workstations deliver the
broadest range of Windows NT Workstation performance on a single
platform with seven powerful Intel-based and Alpha-based models.
Intel-based models include single 100, 120, and 133MHz and dual
100 and 133 MHz Pentium processors. Alpha-based models include
the 233 MHz and 266 MHz versions of the Alpha 21064 processor. In
addition, personal workstations will be upgradeable to Intel's
Pentium Pro processor and future Alpha processors when they
become available.
Digital has tuned this family of workstations to run Windows NT,
and it is not known if they plan on porting VMS for these
stations.
